SBNDC was founded because of the lack of resources available for low-income South Berkeley residents.
South Berkeley has been a pioneer for championing initiatives on the behalf of African-Americans.
It is home to one of the oldest Juneteenth festivals in the country.
Its parks have been proving grounds for notable athletes such as MLB Hall of Famer Rickey Henderson, NFL Players Union President Hannibal Navies, and the 1987 U.S. Tennis Championship Team based out of San Pablo Park.
Adjacent to the Berkeley Farmers Market, Berkeley Juneteenth Festival, as well as cafes, restaurants, daycare, and gyms.

For nearly 4 decades, Berkeley has celebrated Juneteenth, an homage to the time when the last of the U.S. slaves were notified of their emancipation.
It has been a pioneering event, ultimately leading to it being recognized as a national holiday.
